Top tips on addressing your dog biting issues

It is perfectly natural for dogs to want to bite. It is an instinctive reaction to certain situations, such as for defense and even out of play. While this is true, it is vital that in your owner-dog relationship you are the one in control at all times, and this includes your dog’s biting habits. Before considering how to tackle your dog biting problem appropriately and effectively, we should bear in mind the reasons why dogs bite in the first place. As a result we will be able to make an informed judgement with regards to how to best handle the situation.

Anyone who has brought up a young puppy will know that they tend to like nipping their owner. Although, in my opinion, this does not constitute biting as such, if not handled properly, it can easily escalate to a more sinister bite. Light nipping is something puppies do both to other dogs and to people as a means of learning where the control in the relationship lies, as it is a means of establishing dominance. He will often nip when he either wants or does not want to play. Your puppy is basically pushing the boundaries and seeing how you will react, as a means of finding out what kind of play is acceptable and what is not. For some puppies, however, they do not know when to stop. Like some naughty children, they will push the boundaries until you give in, and before you know it they will be biting you for attention, and all of a sudden they are in control. This is why it is so vitally important that you set realistic boundaries and are consistent with upholding them.

The key to controlling dog biting is to ensure that you are in control at all times. Some puppies respond well to a simple expressed of ‘No!’ Or even a growl. By reacting to their misbehavior immediately and with a firm tone, your dog will understand that he is doing something unacceptable and will take your threats seriously. If you have established a good relationship with obedience training you should have no problems in controlling your dog in this scenario. As well as the latter, do bear in mind that you should always play on your level. Dogs absolutely love it when people get down on all fours and play with them, and while these can be fun and indeed foster a positive relationship, they can also lead to serious problems with dogs which have dominance issues. While dogs typically have a great respect for height, by lowering yourself to their level you are subconsciously giving the message that you and he are equals, and therefore he is entitled to bite you. Instead, make sure you keep at least your head and shoulders above him, as this will retain your authority and remind your dog that you are to be respected, not bitten.

Dog biting is yet another means your dog will use to try and assert control over the situation. While it is instinctive, it is still acceptable in the dog-owner relationship as long as it is not excessive and out of your control. The best thing would be to undergo a dog training routine which encompasses effective dog biting strategies, but do bear these key tips in mind whenever you handle your dog.
