Train Dogs

Training a dog is not too difficult, but there are some very outdated dog training tips flying around! Here are some tips to help you with training a dog:-

1. Never, ever rub your dog’s nose in it. Years ago this was a common way to let your dog know that it should not be pooping in your home. It is an overly aggressive method that does not work anyway. All your dog will learn if you rub his nose in any mess he makes, is to fear you.

Instead you should take your dog to the chosen potty area when he has an accident in the house, and make sure that you clean the area he messed on thoroughly so there will be no odor that he can pick up from it. When your dog does eliminate in the correct place, give him lots of praise.

2. Do not alter the commands you give. If you are trying to teach your dog to walk to heel and say ‘heel’ one time and ‘walk nicely’ another, he will not learn what you expect him to do. You should also try and use the same vocal range when you give the command.

If you alter what you say and how you say it, you are just going to be confusing the dog and slowing down the whole training process.

3. It is far easier to train a dog than to have to re-train him. So remember that if you have a puppy, he will grow into an adult dog. Some of the things that he does as a pup may seem cute, for instance jumping up in excitement when he sees you, but it will not seem cute when he is fully grown. Imagine a guest arriving in all their finery, and your adult dog jumps up at them with his muddy paws. This won’t go down well at all. So make sure you stop the jumping at an early age.

4. A dog needs masses of praise and attention. There is nothing that will get through to a dog more than praise and rewards from you. So be sure to give him plenty – when he does something correctly, give him a treat. A dog that is bored or feels forgotten is much more likely to misbehave. So make sure your dog knows he is loved.
